The number of residential construction jobs rose by 5.8% in 2015, more than double the annual growth rate in overall employment, according to a report posted by Zillow. But even if that growth rate continues, it will take until 2020 to return to pre-crash levels of 2008. That's bad news for builders who are relying on a broader workforce to produce housing for a younger buyer market. Krishna Rao, director of economic product and research at Zillow, said total employment in residential construction is more than 20% lower than it was before the financial meltdown. "It is neither the best of times nor the worst of times for the residential construction industry," Zillow's report says. "Instead, the industry seems stuck somewhere in the middle, growing sufficiently to put the lean recession years firmly in the rearview, but not enough to declare a full-blown comeback in construction jobs."
