Deck builders are increasingly using drone-mounted cameras to capture aerial video footage of their completed projects. And while there are already rules covering the operation of recreational drones and other similar model aircraft (called Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems, or sUAS), the FAA has just adopted stricter requirements. Starting December 21, 2015, new owners of small UAS with a weight between 250 grams (0.55 pounds) and 25 kilograms (55 pounds) must register them with the FAA prior to their first outdoor flight. Owners of existing models have until February 19, 2016 to register their UAS.  Registration costs $5.00, and can be done through a web-based system at www.faa.gov/uas/registration. Owners must be at least 13 years old to register online. To encourage registration, the FAA is waiving the $5.00 fee for those who sign up prior to January 20, 2016.
