decks vs. patiosAccording to the NAHB, data from the Census Bureau's Survey of Construction shows that only 23 percent of new homes started in 2014 included a deck, while the majority of homes nationwide (56 percent) had a patio. As the map shows, decks are apparently a regional preference in New England (included in 66 percent of homes started in 2014) and in East South Central states (47 percent), but comparatively uncommon in the West South Central division (4 percent). In contrast, patios are most common in the West South Central (79 percent of new homes started in 2014), followed by the Mountain (66 percent) and Pacific divisions (65 percent).  Read more.
