Two deck failures in Emerald Isle, N.C., last year prompted the community to put a new emphasis on deck safety, and this year's July 4th celebrations passed without incident. After the deck collapses, which in all sent 29 people to the ground, the town organized deck-safety classes for both builders and the general public. Topics included how to evaluate deck boards, connectors, and handrails. The town also sent out deck-safety mailings and posted information on the town's website. All single-family and duplex vacation rental units managed by seven major rental companies in town must be inspected at least once a year.
