This straightforward deck was built by contributing editor Kim Katwijk of Deck Builders Inc. in Olympia, Wash. The inlay, simple as it is, required a lot of blocking so that all the pieces would be supported within 3 inches of their ends (for a more complicated project, see Eye for Design, March/April 2009; deckmagazine.com). Note that the blocking is installed vertically, for strength. An extra joist at each end of the deck supports the darker band of decking around the perimeter. The decking is two contrasting colors of Azek Deck — Kona and Sedona — fastened with complementary-colored GRK Kameleon screws; matching deck boards on the benches finish off the design (see “Benches Built for Comfort,” May/June 2008; deckmagazine.com). The aluminum railing system is from Metals USA.
