Synthetic deck maker Trex is encouraging students to collect plastic bags and other types of polyethylene as part of America Recycles Day on Nov. 15 and give their schools a chance to win Trex products. The Trex Film Recycling Challenge is open to elementary-, middle-, and high-school students. Students from 430 schools last year collected more than 167,000 pounds of plastic film that otherwise would have been landfilled, and helped turn it into decking, according to the company. Trex says it uses more than 1.5 billion plastic bags annually (a single 16-foot Trex board contains 2,250 plastic bags). Regional finalists and a national winner will be announced on Earth Day (April 22) next year. Read More
