Seven people were hospitalized in Springfield, Mo., when a backyard deck collapsed and sent them 10 feet to the ground. A local TV station said the homeowners, who had lived in the house for only a month, were hosting a birthday party at the time. The county's chief building inspector told a reporter the connection between the deck ledger and the rim joist of the house was faulty, and if you watch the footage, you'll see a close-up of the ledger area beginning at about the 0:35 mark. The film clip includes a brief glimpse of joist hangers on the deck ledger, but plenty of signs of decay at the rim joist.
