More than 150 decks in the seaside vacation community of Emerald Isle, N.C., have been repaired in the wake of two deck collapses last summer. A dozen people were hurt when the decks, weakened by years of exposure to salt air, failed. The surge of deck repairs came after the town hosted several classes and meetings about inspecting and repairing decks. The town does not require annual inspections, so property management companies and homeowners took it upon themselves to ensure decks were in good repair.
