Rental agents and town officials in Emerald Isle, N.C., have launched a mandatory deck inspection program, prompted in part by two deck collapses this summer. The seven rental companies together manage more than 1,500 vacation units, which now will undergo mandatory inspections at least once a year. Inspections are to be completed by March of next year, just in time for the new rental season. If a deck is not inspected, the unit can’t be rented. In one of the collapses, two dozen family members were hurt over the 4th of July weekend when a deck fell 10 feet to the ground.
