A deck at a late 19th century home in Brooklyn, N.Y., collapsed during a party earlier this month, injuring 16 people. Two people suffered serious injuries in the 12:30 a.m. mishap. It wasn't clear what caused the deck to fail, but a fire department battalion chief told the New York Post, "I think just old age and rot and disrepair, it just wasn't maintained properly." The owner of the building, called Cook Mansion, was issued a code violation, according to a spokesman for the city, for failure to maintain the deck in a safe condition.
