When Jay McKnight and Mike Evans, of Hammer & Hand, a Portland, Ore., design-build firm, saw plans calling for wrap-around stairs on a deck, they decided to lay out the framing as they would the corner of a hip roof rather than fall back on the more conventional approach of using a pair of corner stringers and a lot of blocking.
