A deck collapse at an Ohio condo complex that injured a father and his daughter was caused by a failed ledger connection, according to a local construction professor who examined the deck. Photos and video taken at the scene clearly show that nails rather than ledger bolts were used to attach the ledger to the side of the condo. Not only that, a layer of rigid foam insulation separated the ledger from the framing. Local officials have determined that 156 balconies in the condo community were built using similar construction details, leading the officials to declare all of the balconies unsafe. The condo management company has hired a structural engineer to inspect and assess the decks.
