I am designing a second story deck (have a walk out basement) - the steps off the deck would not be used that much.
Has anyone done or can suggested a spiral staircase? I would like to avoid having two big flights of steps as I need 15 risers.
Thanks

I currently have a client who wants one from their deck. We are ahving to jump through hoops tp get a permit for it, so be careful about your municipal code requirements

We have used a spiral staircase in the past from http://www.theironshop.com we had minor problems with the code office but not too bad. Just getting everything they wanted to see was a pain.
Install was straight forward, I really did not read the directions and put it together by myself in about a day (12 steps I think) but we did a basic one with just the metal. If you were capping the treads and platform with decking it would add to the time. I also recommend a second person as it would have made it easier but I was stubborn back then.

I've used these guys. there is a mininum, width for code 54" on the staircase, I would only use powdercoated aluminum, as the steel will start to rust in a year or less.

I used the ironshop one time for a sprial never again. The " kit " was not complete in a lot of ways the damm thing cost me $900 to fix the kit. Very bad Customer service.
I use a local iron worker now who builds the staircase in one piece. They deliver with several coats of heavy black com paint. His price is under the kit and is forever done without all those little nuts/bolts . Like any steel project installed outside there is some maintance to be done. a rattle can of rust-oleum works for my Customers.

I did about 8 spiral stairs from the ironshop in Pennsylvania. I drove to their showroom to check them out before I ordered my first one (early nineties)
Most where steel and painted on the jobsite. In all cased I choose the diamond shape treads and landing. One time I ordered the galvanized but it was very expensive in comparison and it took another 4 weeks since the ship it to somebody else to have it galvanized.
If you do pull a permit you need to order a BOCA. They are approved by IRC.
They can give you the specs and approvals in case your permit office requires it.
I did one from Salter spiral stairs. They are definitely of better quality and of course a little higher in cost but better service as well (compared with the ironshop)

Do you have a picture of the area you plan on installing the Spiral Staircase? That would help in determining the material/size/plans to use.

can anyone tell me about advantages and disadvantages of spiral staircase? how is it better )or worse ) than the usual one? i like the idea of spiral staircase but it seems to me that the ordinary staircase is more convenient. is it?

It comes down to function... The spiral is going to take up less space, look neat, and get you up and down one person at a time.
A standard 4' stairway will be spacious in comparison, and allow you to move stuff up and down the stairway (furniture, grills, etc..) It does take up more space so a standard exterior deck staircase needs to be designed out well.
As what was said above a spiral stair cases are a challenge to meet code approval, so due your homework if you are choosing this option. Salter Industries is a good company and very helpful.
