Here in Okla. when I start a job I'll call Okie Bug out to detect all utilities before I dig. I know that's a big, duh! The last few jobs were big enough to justify a driller for the post. I couldn't rent the diggert because the gas service couldn't be clearly identified since the plastic line didn't have a wire or way to locate. In both cases using a fiber glass pokey pole I identified the lines but they were far from straight to the meter.

Do you guys have a better way to identify underground hazards?

Last year a remodeler blew up a house by hitting a gas line. Okie Bug had come out, but the line the remodeler hit was something a previous owner had run on his own out to the garage. Okie's excuse was they can only identify and look for lines that are registered. I know the builder should have gone out to the detached garage and looked for utilities but I can easily see myself here.

rather than have to deal with the ho's presumption that they can pawn off that stuff to the builder you we have as a part of the contract that: it is the responsibility of the ho to locate all the pipes and underground stuff in the way of the digger. a good example of that is the sprinkler line that people try to make us pay for. it states on the contract that the repair for the sprinkler lines cost $40.00 ea. we have eliminated a lot of the stress by doing that.
whenever the utilitis are staked[ miss dig here] in mich they can only do the utility co's line as there is a signal running through it. or its a mqagnetic thing. anyways what i AM SAYING IS WHILE IT IS UNFORTUNATE THAT SOMETHING UNDERGOUND GETS HIT YOU MUST STATE IN YOUR CONTRACT WHO IS TO BE RESPONSIBLE OR BE PREPARED TO DO A LOT OF FIGHTING
