View Full Version : Framing Dilema

I'm planning a covered porch in a traditional style (i.e., with flooring running perpendicular to the house) and everything I read/see has a layout with a beam at the end and stringers running perpendicular to the house - which puts the flooring parallel to the house. The deck is to be 16' deep (from house to far end)

Since I have very little clearance above the gorund (about 18"), my question is: Can I run double stringers out from the house and support them on piers, then place framing in between them using meta joist hangers? I'm looking for design guidance on lumber size and spacing (if this sounds feasible).

Hi Steve, You can do what you're aleady thinking in terms of raising what I'd refer to as a perpendicular beam up into the floor joist framing system as a girder so that the joist flush with the doubled girder., providing more ground clearance. . Everyone seems to have differnt terminolgy but we in the South of cousre know ours is right. Just kidding. What is the width from side to side which will factor into joist sizing? I think you mentioned that this is coming 16' off the house? Also depending on whether this is a shed roof porch or gable will factor into other footing/support allowances transferred from the roof.
