I am installing Ipe with #8x2 1/2 trim head SS Headcote square drive screws and predrilling with a smart bit. Nearly half the screws won't seat properly unless I add another step and drill down about 3" with an 1/8" bit. The only other way I can seat them is to set my Makita to Hammer mode and hold my breath for fear of breaking the screw! Is there a better way?
On another note.....Man is this Ipe hard to straighten!!!

Make sure that you predrill down until the large black casing, stops spinning. Also, make sure you are using the right smart bit, not #7.
Sorry, but I've installed thousands of those screws with the smart bit, and never have a problem. We also use a impact driver, not a drill.
Do you have a bow wrench, or something similar, to help straighten boards? Most ipe is fairly straight, to begin with.
I have been working with those and also the pro-plugs. First, no hammer drill. A hammer drill isnt an impact driver. Also, I found that if I stop mid-drive then kick it in again i'm much more likely to break the screw. Just drive em in in one continuous motion. I'm using an impact driver (Cordless Makita LXT) You need to apply proper downward pressure to avoid stripping up the heads.
