In reading one of my trade magazines I ran across this link for a nice reference guide for deck construction. It covers some span charts, fastener and hardwre requirements, ledger and stair attachment as well as other structural issues. It's a good thing to have for answering many questions that pop up.

Be careful in considering this guide as "code". Most of the provisions contained within are not found in the IRC. With that said, the publisher of the document (AF&PA) is very reputable and writes many standards that are referenced by the code. While the DCA6 is not referenced, it may be approved as alternative provisions.

Check your next issue of the Professional Deck Builder magazine, I am working on an article discussing this very document and the use of alternatives.
