I have a customer that is complaining of loud banging on their deck at night . I know this is an expansion problem because my own wood deck does it. My deck is old and I find nails sticking up and I believe that is probably what is happening here. I like most deck builder built their deck years ago and the materials are now better and my own deck needs redone. Has any one had a complaint from a customer about their deck making loud banging noises usually at night. Don't say polderguiest either. I have spent several hours researching noise and there is always a jokester that says that. We ususally use 2 3/8"stainless steel nails for our fasteners.(wood decks) We use trapease screws for our composite decks. I am wondering if the nails are the problem. I did notice that the nail manufactures do not make the nails with ridges that are very pronounced that would grab better.
Screws would be a better solution I am thinking. Post your replays
Thanks

well,
I went out and looked at the deck to investigate why the deck it is making a loud banging sound. I believe it is the decking causing the noise. When we install the decking we usually install it tight. once it dries out it ususally has about 3/8 " spaces between the boards. For some reason .this deck has most of the decking did not shrink. he deck was built in March so it had the summer to dry out . also the owner did stain the deck. I believe the decking is expanded and when it contracts,it makes the loud banging sound when it goes down against the joist. This is the only explanation I can think of. The neighbors deck does it as well. These decks are built on new homes as a side note. This is an all wood deck.
Any one who has had this problem please post your thoughts. thanks
