Figure 1. An interlocking ipe grid rests on levelers placed atop the roof. No penetrations of the roof membrane are made.

Figure 2. Patio stones or preassembled panels of ipe fit within the grid and are easily removed to service the roof below.

Figure 3. The grid is made from half-lapped 5/4 ipe. Ledgers screwed to the grid are spaced from the members to keep the end grain of the ipe panels they support from sitting in trapped water.

Figure 4. Cleats screwed from below unite the ipe boards into panels with a fastener-free look.

Figure 5. Pairs of marine-plywood ramps slide past each other to raise the grid member to the correct height and are then screwed fast.
